My Favourite Black Home Tours: Celebrating Ancestry and Style

Okay, so I love watching home tours. Like genuinely, it is one of my favourite things to do. There is something so restorative about watching someone walk you through their space, it’s the ultimate form of sanctuary-making inspiration.

While I appreciate all interior design, I especially love watching Black home tours. I love seeing the intentional ways we use Black home decor to inject culture and ancestry into our living spaces. It looks different from person to person and household to household, and that's exactly what makes these stories so good to watch. Always makes me want to get up and start rearranging things.

Shanika Hillocks - 2 Bed NYC Apartment

I LOVE how intentional all of Shanika's choices are, like how the amount of light determines what she uses that particular space for and the colour choices. I can't get over the bedroom. It's perfect, actually.

Imani Keal - 850 Sq Ft Apartment

Imani's space is full of considered design, with art work that represents in her own words "who we are" citing this as something we should feature within our living spaces. I couldn't agree more! I especially love how she was able to upholster a chair to that standard off the back of a single workshop. Kudos!

Amber Guyton - Atlanta Bungalow

Described by Amber as 'soulful maximalism' her living space looks so cosy, warm and peaceful. I can totally see myself falling asleep on that sofa. I love how much Black art she has throughout her space. Again, really considered and thoughtful.

Natasha Landers - London Townhouse

Another space I'm in love with. Full of colour, character, texture, culture - I love it. The kitchen dining space is chef's kiss with the skylight - I love rooms with skylights. So many interesting trinkets and artwork to look at

Abe Odedina - Brixton Terrace

Ade has ancestral pieces of art displayed all throughout the living space, makes you feel a sense of home through the screen, can't explain it! Very organic, biophilic feel to parts of the space, with a rustic and natural vibe, almost like you're connected to the Earth while being inside. I enjoyed this tour and the story behind it all!

Kemide Lawson - London Cottage

Cottage Noir is gorgeous and I expected nothing less from the founder of The Cornrow. I love the cosy decorated nooks, the colour drenching, the textured walls, and all the beautiful soft furnishings and homeware created by Black artists.

Marissa Calhoun - 2 bed House, Inglewood

I'm obsessed with this house. Have you seen the garden?? Pure unregulated dopamine that is. I really love the corner nook in the kitchen. It's labelled as a dreamhouse and I can definitely understand why.

If you’re looking for even more inspiration, I’ve curated a growing collection of over 45 Black home tours over on YouTube. It’s a dedicated space for exploring our stories through design, you can watch the full Black Home Tours playlist here.
